There are many things going on in the SPHS Band Boosters even though marching season is over.
For those of you who have attended the past few meetings, you are aware of the dire financial situation we are in. That being said, we will be starting a new fundraiser with Cookie Dough sales to help members meet their financial obligation. It will run for 1 week only - Thurs. Feb 10 to to Wed. Feb. 16th. Students can earn approximately 40% towards their band fees. Forms will be available in the band room. Please do your part to pay off outstanding 2010 Marching Band Fees. The Band's future depends on it. As always "Make Me a Whole Person" forms are available on the website if you have friends or family that would like to donate in your name but not purchase a product.
Butts for Band - We have sold 116 smoked boston butts. Thank you to all who participated. They will be cooked this Friday night and available for pick-up on Sat. at the High School from 10 am to 2 pm. ***** Lee Smith is still in need of seasoned hickory wood. If anyone has any to donate please contact Becky Smith at 770-595-4073
There is a $5.00 participation fee for GMEA (Georgia Music Educators Association) for all students attending District Honor Band in Ringold on Feb. 17th. This is in addition to the audition fee which was collected last fall. Please make checks out to SPHS Band Boosters and put in the red box.
Once again we will be hosting a Battle of the Bands. This is a competition of smaller rock-type bands made up of students from Paulding County High Schools. The date is Friday April 1st at 7:00 pm. We need volunteers to help coordinate this event, set up, sell tickets, solicit donations for a raffle, etc. Please help if you are able! Contact a Booster Member, Mr. Carr, or Mr. Roberts if you are able to help.

Butts for Band
Just a reminder to please continue selling Butts for Band even though we haven't seen each other all week. Remember that each Boston Butt is $25.00. Collect money up front - Checks should be made out to SPHS Band Boosters. Orders and money are due at the next booster meeting which is January 24, 2011 at 7:00PM. This could be a very good annual fundraiser once the word gets out about how wonderful they taste. Orders will be ready for pick up on Saturday, February 5, 2011 just in time for SUPERBOWL SUNDAY : )
Fundraising is a hard job, but we all do it in the best interest of the children. I know there have been many fundraisers this year and many of us are tired of fundraising. Our focus is on finding the fundraisers that work the best to restructure our fundraising efforts so that no one is burned out with fundraising. We just want to offer as many options to help meet financial responsibilities as possible. Thank you for doing what you can to show the kids that what they work hard for everyday is important.

Spirit Has Five in All-State!
This past Saturday 2000 students from across the state of Georgia auditioned at Houston County High School to be invited to participate in the GMEA All-State Band. In order to audition on Saturday the students had to pass a first round audition. South Paulding High School had 24 students qualify for the auditions! Although this process is humbling to most when the lists finally come out, it is an honorable endeavor and worthwhile process. All-State is about the journey that the students take and the achievements made along the way. Any time a student sets a goal and follows through with the commitment of practicing for extra opportunities our band program gets better. All groups are made up of the individuals that contribute to it. We rely on individual improvement and achievement to continue to grow. All of the students who auditioned for District Honor Band and All-State have taken it upon themselves to make our band better by taking on extra practicing responsibilities and putting their best foot forward. I am proud of each and everyone of them. Please take time to thank them for their hard work and extra practice.
The process is very humbling because we started with 65 students who auditioned for the first round, 31 students make District Honor Band, then had 24 advance to the second round (some students would have advanced but decided to only audition for the district level), and out of those 24 we have 5 students who have been invited to participate in the All-State Band. The odds alone are intimidating not to mention students have to perform solos individually for 2 judges. This is why all students who auditioned are to be congratulated. Our students who are invited to All-State are: Katie Webb, flute; Blake Soverns, flute; Allison Webb, f horn; Jonas Lutz, f horn (1st alternate); and Andrew Engshun, trombone. Again, if you have a chance please take the time to congratulate our students and share with them how proud we are of their achievements.

No School Tomorrow
It has been one of those weeks. I guess this might be a snow storm to compete with the "Blizzard of '93." I guess if you wait long enough you will get a substantial amount of snow even in GA : )
I hope that everyone is continuing to stay warm, safe, but still having fun during your time off. School has been cancelled tomorrow also - Yes, that means we have missed Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and now Thursday from this week. If you did not get enough rest during your Christmas Vacation then hopefully you will be eager to return when school is reopened. I will see you then!

GSU Double Reed Day
Below is an e-mail from the oboe and bassoon teachers at GSU. They are hosting a Double Reed Day later this month. It would be a great day for our oboists and bassoons to attend.
"Happy Snow Day to all of you!
Just a reminder that the deadline for your students to register for the GSU Double Reed Day without a $10 late fee is this Friday, Jan. 14th. The fee is $20 and the students can register by clicking on the application link in the right-hand corner: http://www.cmp.music.gsu.edu/doublereedday.htm
We hope to see your oboists and bassoonists there! This is a wonderful opportunity for them to meet and work with renowned musicians Martin Schuring, oboe professor at Arizona State University, and Jeffrey Lyman, bassoon professor at University of Michigan and to meet many other double reed players in the community.
Please have your students bring their instruments, and bassoonists should bring their reedmaking tools if they have some.
Please email me if you have any questions. Thank you for your support!
Sincerely,
Lara Dahl

Schools closed today
Just a reminder that school is closed today, which means all afterschool activities are also cancelled. The concert band rehearsal should be considered a TBA if it is to be rescheduled. Thank you for your flexibility during these times. I hope that everyone has had a relaxing time at home, stayed warm, off the streets, and found new ways to sled as we did : ) Cadence loves sledding in our laundry basket.

Schools Closed Tuesday
Schools are closed tomorrow. This means that no classes will meet and no afterschool activities will take place. We may reschedule the afterschool rehearsals planned, but as of now they should be considered TBA. I hope that everyone is staying warm, safe, and enjoying their time off. Also- I asked the kids to take their horns home over the weekend - this would be a great time to practice. If you want a great study aid - smartmusic.com is a really good resource!
District Honor Band Information
I have included 2 PDFs to be downloaded from our charms website for students who are participating in the 2011 District Honor Band. The first is information about the event - itinerary, etc. and the second is a list of area hotels. It is being hosted by Heritage High School in Ringgold, GA on February 17, 18, and 19. Cost is $5.00/student. Please put the $5.00 in the box ASAP.
