Rookie/Percussion/Guard Camp Survival Reminders

I look forward to seeing our rookies, guard, and percussion students at camp this week!  Guard and percussion rookies do not need to report to rookie camp.  Colorguard members: we will see you starting Wednesday.  Percussion students: I look forward to seeing you just before 1:00pm because your camp runs from 1:00pm-5:00pm.  Rookies:  We will meet in the band room at 9:00am.  Please be a little early to be sure to have everything that you will need for camp.

Everyone: Be sure to drink plenty of fluids to battle this heat.  This week especially has been very hot and it will be even hotter on the pavement.  It is impossible to suddenly become dehydrated.  Dehydration occurs because of the lack of hydration over a period of time.  It is vital that you are taking care of yourself even before we begin in the hot sun.  Wear light clothing that is appropriate for athletics.  Shorts and t-shirts are appropriate.  Wear hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen.  Also, socks and athletic shoes are required.  Please do not show up in jeans, sandals, barefoot, and wearing long sleeves.  More details about what is appropriate to wear is included in the band handbook.

In case you are skimming or looking for bold print DRINK PLENTY OF WATER.  Ice water will be provided during camps to re-hydate students, but it is important for everyone to attend already hydrated.  If it is possible to bring a reusable plastic cup or water bottle we can cut back on the amount wasted from paper cups.  Students shouldn't share cups or water bottles.

Also, lunch will not be provided.  There will be a short break in the middle of the day for students to eat lunch.  Please bring a sensible lunch packed in a lunch bag/cooler with your name on it.  We will store student lunches in the hallway outside of the band room.  Students will not be permitted to leave campus during camps.  If they forget a lunch it is ok for a parent to bring the lunch at 12:00pm, but not ok for the student to leave.

I hope that this post answers some questions, but if you have more then you can contact me at  It is going to be a terrific year!  Let's start it off right!
